Meet The Face Behind HAIRDOME

I’m Disa des Vignes, the proud owner of HAIRDOME.

I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.

My mother, Joan des Vignes Bullen, was an amazingly talented hairdresser and successfully opened a salon called HAIRDOME in Downtown Toronto over thirty years ago.

Subsequently, I was born into the business, and as soon as I was old enough, I started sweeping floors and answering phones. I later progressed to washing hair and performing other tasks my mother taught me.

I loved the work so much that after completing high school, I enrolled at the Marvel hairdressing school in Yorkville, Toronto. Once I graduated, I enthusiastically went back to working side by side with my mother, and we eventually relocated to Scarborough.

However, in 2014, she got sick, and as a family, we decided it was best to close the salon and focus on taking care of her.

Sadly, my mother passed away one year later, which left a huge void in our lives. She was also dearly missed by her clients, as she treated them like family by listening, caring, and always giving her best to make them look beautiful.

Her legacy inspired me to reopen HAIRDOME, in 2017, and soon, my daughter Kyelah joined me in the family business, which I’m sure would have made my mother proud.

Since relaunching the family business three years ago, I moved it to Pickering, although I’ve managed to recreate the original salon’s downtown feel and flair. Besides, in an endeavor to take the business to greater heights, I opened up a men’s barbershop in 2019.

While I’ve modernized the business, I’ve maintained my family’s core values. It includes treating clients the way I would like them to treat me, by respecting their time, and budget and educating them about their unique hair.

I feel that every head of hair is capable of greatness when treated with love and care, and I try to impress on my clients’ that good hair is the condition, not the texture. I also attribute my success to having a well-trained team of stylists that listen carefully, and give clients a look they desire.

Our salon experience is all about pampering clients and offering them an unrushed service while making them look fabulous. Consequently, when a client comes in feeling down and leaves my salon confident with a big smile on their face, it fills me with immense satisfaction.

When I’m not styling my clients’ hair, I love to travel, which my mother also enjoyed doing. I also like to read and take care of my large family. I have two daughters, two sons, a son-in-law, and a granddaughter, who may one day become the fourth generation to join the family business.

On a final note, I would like to add that I feel very strongly about the Black Lives Matter movement. As a black woman, it’s important for me to be a leader and example of ‘black excellence.’

Therefore, I’m proud to use the hashtag #blackownedbusiness. The community has embraced supporting black-owned businesses, and I have been getting many new clients who have found my salon by looking for black-owned businesses to support.

I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
